How to Choose Golf Clubs for Kids
When you first entered the market for your own golf clubs, did you find it hard to know which set to buy? Of course, you did. We all did.
Different manufacturers usually have different parameters to classify their clubs. So, you might be able to master one brand’s sizing parameters, but you need to start from scratch again when you want to switch brands.
All of it becomes even harder when you try to get golf clubs for kids. There is no universal measuring system for junior golf clubs. Moreover, manufacturers all use different parameters to make theirs.
While we really can’t help you with individual options, we can definitely guide you in the right direction.
Here are the things you need to consider the most.
Weight
In similar price ranges, you will find plenty of clubs. They might look similar as well. However, the weight can vary dramatically based on what material is used for the club head and the shaft. It’s ideal to go for lightweight clubs for kids.
The reasoning is quite obvious. You don’t want your kids to feel out of rhythm due to the heavier weight. They cannot regulate their motion as we do.
So, going with lighter clubs will allow them to master the skills more easily. And when they’re ready to switch to heavier gear, it will be a smoother transition.
Length
By length, we’re referring to shaft length. This is somewhat problematic for many parents when they try to introduce their children to golf. A slight mismatch in the shaft length can dramatically impact their learning abilities.
The best bet is to go into a physical retailer and test out different shaft lengths. On your end, you should do some research on the ideal posture and swing style in golf. We have various articles on our website guiding you about how to have perfect posture.
When you know how you’re supposed to look in the ideal form, you can translate the information for your kids. As a result, when you see your kids testing out different clubs, you’ll be a better judge of whether the club is suitable for them or not.
Single Club vs Sets
When you’re an adult, it’s relatively easier for you to find different types of clubs from different manufactures to make your set. But it’s not that simple for kids. Due to the varied measuring system, you might find yourself hours at a time in retailers figuring out what you want to do.
That’s why we recommend getting sets from manufacturers instead of picking each one individually. This way, you need to measure and feel one club from the set. For example, if you get the driver right, other clubs will fall into place from the same set.
If you don’t want to go with a full set, you can divide it into three sections. The long clubs, the mid clubs, and the short game clubs.
For example, you may get the driver from a manufacturer. We usually have only one driver in our bag. The irons should be in sets. That way, from 3-iron through 9-iron, all of them will have a similar feel. Then, you can top it off with wedges and putters from the same manufacturer.

Skip the Fancy Technology for Now
Manufacturers have really stepped up their game in including new technologies into their clubs. And new technology means a higher price. However, when it’s kid’s clubs we’re talking about, there’s really no point in spending big bucks unless you’re preparing them for professional golf.
Another reason to skip out on the fancy technologies is that the kids won’t be benefited from them. You need a certain level of mental maturity to properly utilize special features. Until your kids are ready to use them, save the money.
Get the Clubs from the Reputed Manufacturers
There are only a handful of manufacturers in the world who have perfected the art of crafting golf clubs. However, you can get similar quality and ergonomics from more affordable brands as well because adult golf has been played for over 200 years! There are plenty of research materials and templates available to design adult golf clubs.
When it comes to children, the industry is not yet there. So, if you opt for unreliable brands, there is a chance that your kids learning abilities might take a hit. Smaller manufacturers just don’t’ have the resources to develop a foolproof club design in most cases.
So, our recommendation is to stick to the prominent brands like the ones we’ve reviewed below.
Best Golf Clubs for Kids
In this section, we’re going to look at some of the best budget-friendly golf clubs for kids. Don’t worry, we’re not going to flood you with lots of choices only to confuse you even further. Rather, we’re going to keep your list short and simple.
-
Ray Cook Golf Manta Ray Package Set
As we’ve recommended you to go with sets instead of individual purchases, it’s only fair if we start our list with a set. This one is from Ray Cook, one of the most popular manufactures out there for kid’s golf equipment.
The Manta Ray package set comes in three different age groups. 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. One of the main reasons this club made the top of our list is its durability. When you’re dealing with kids, it’s obvious that they won’t be able to take care of their equipment as you would. Also, it’s more likely that they’ll bang the club into the ground more than they would hit the ball.

Kids Golf TS3 Package Set
As you can already see in the name, this manufacturer is specialized in kid’s golf. So, the TS3 shows dedication in every single aspect. In our opinion, Kids Golf has done a fantastic job of sizing the clubs appropriately for the different age groups.
Across the TS3 range of clubs, you’ll find three models with nine different sizes. It means you can really tune into the setup your kid is comfortable with. However, this set is relatively on the expensive side.
You can feel the premium features the moment you touch the clubs. The grips are made from very high-quality materials to ensure that the clubs don’t fly out of the kids’ hands. Also, it offers more flex options on the shafts than most other manufacturers.

Callaway Junior XJ Golf Package Set
Those who have been in the amazing world of golf need no introduction to Callaway. It’s one of the finest brands when it comes to golf equipment like clubs. Just like it has reigned over the adult segment, Callaway has some impressive offerings in the kid’s segment as well.
Callaway Junior XJ is a prime example of such offerings. The set comes for both right-handed and left-handed juniors. It also comes into four different levels. Level 1, or XJ1 is for kids between the heights of 38 inches to 46 inches. XJ2 is for 47 inches to 53 inches. And XJ3 is for kids between 54 inches to 61 inches. The last set is for teens, known as the XJ teen set.
The three levels come with different combinations of clubs. For example, the XJ2 is a 6-piece set consisting of a driver, a fairway wood, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a sand wedge, and a putter. It’s a very well-balanced combination of clubs, perfect to launch your kid into golf.

TaylorMade Rory Junior Package
Would you consider a ‘best club list’ complete without the mention of TaylorMade? We know we won’t. TaylorMade is one of the biggest and most popular golf club brands in the world. The other half of the name, Rory, obviously comes from the PGA professional Rory Mcllroy!
Rory junior package club set comes for two age groups, 4+ and 8+. It might look quite a jump but the clubs in between the age ranges are very cleverly designed. The more shocking thing is that TaylorMade Rory is quite affordable! It’s not every day that you come across affordable products attached with celebrity names!
The set comes with precisely engineered drivers for the juniors. In our opinion, this is the centerpiece of the package. It’s a titanium driver with the club head measuring 400cc. It has a 16-degree loft which is right where you want to be when you first start out.
Final Words
No matter what brand you prefer for yourself, you should consider your kids’ comfort when getting their clubs. You should go with package sets, as we’ve said earlier. But you’re free to choose individual clubs from the manufacturers we’ve mentioned.
All of these manufacturers are reputed for their relentless efforts to make golf a more inclusive sport. The inclusion of junior clubs and seniors clubs is a prime example.
So, go out and get the best club or clubs for the future golf star (hopefully)!
